Orange’s Number 2 Fire Station on Allie Payne Road and Meeks Drive was open Friday for the first time since Tropical Storm Harvey August 30.
Fire Chief David Frenzel the station had 12 to 16 inches of water inside during the storm flood. The station is the only one the city has north of Interstate 10 and serves the Little Cypress area.
After the flood, the personnel and equipment from Number 2 were working out of the Number 3 station on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near Strickland Drive.
Frenzel said the station was built in 1979 and had to be gutted. When it was built, paneling was in style for walls and all the paneling had to be removed. He said the station got an unexpected remodeling and looks better than before.
The city has insurance to cover the damages to the building. In September, the City Council voted to award a repair contract without the bidding process so the station would be ready quicker. State law allows the bid process to be skipped for health and safety reasons. Number 2 station is the only fire station in the city north of Interstate 10.
