Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt and Precinct 4 Constable Weldon Peveto have drawn opponents for the March 1 Republican primary. With less than a week left in filing, no Democratic candidates have filed to run for a county office. Filing ends Monday, Dec. 14. Early Voting is Feb. 16-26.
Local militia leader David W. Smith has filed to run for sheriff and Jimmy Lane Mooney has filed to run against Peveto. The other three constables, Chris Humble in Precinct 1, David Cagle in Precinct 2 and Mark Philpott in Precinct 3, do not have opponents.
In the Precinct 1 County Commissioner race, incumbent David Dubose is retiring and his seat will be open. Shirley Zimmerman and Johnny Trahan have filed for that seat.
Precinct 3 Commissioner John Banken has filed for re-election and is being challenged by John Gothia.
County Tax Assessor-Collector Lynda Gunstream is also retiring. Debbie (Dubois) Meaux and Karen Fisher have filed for that position.
Other incumbents who have filed are 128th District Judge Courtney Burch Arkeen, 163rd District Judge Dennis Powell, County Court-at-Law No. 2 Judge Troy Johnson, County-District Attorney John Kimbrough and County Clerk Brandy Robertson.
