Monday is the last day to file for running in the party primaries on March 1. Five Republicans have filed to run for the Precinct 1 county commissioner seat being vacated by David Dubose.
In Orange County, no Democrats filed for local elections. The county has six contested races in the Republican Primary. Two of the contested spots are county-wide offices.
County Emergency Management Director Ryan Peabody filed Monday to run for the Precinct 1 commissioner’s position, as did Mike Manshack and Gary Hinote. Shirley Zimmerman and Johnny Trahan have also filed. Only people who live in the precinct may vote for the spot.
Incumbent Sheriff Keith Merritt is seeking a third term and is being challenged by David W. Smith of Mauriceville, who is a leader in a local militia. All registered voters in the county may vote for sheriff.
Longtime County Tax assessor-collector Lynda Gunstream is retiring. Debbie Meaux of Orange and Karen Fisher of Vidor have filed for the spot. All registered voters cast ballots for the position.
Precinct 3 County Commissioner John Banken is being challenged by John Gothia.
Longtime Precinct 4 Constable Weldon Peveto has an opponent with Jimmy Lane Mooney.
Precinct 2 Constable David Cagle, running for his second term, is facing Jeremiah Gunter.
Filing for the Republican primary is through County party chair Sheila Faske.
Early voting will be February 16 through 26. The deadline to register to vote is February 1.
