Filing began Saturday, Nov. 14 to run in the Republican and Democratic primary races on March 1. Each party conducts its own election. Candidates for Orange County will file with Republican Chair Sheila Faske or Democratic Chair Deborah Mitchell. Candidates for state and federal offices file through the state party headquarters in Austin.
The Orange County Republican Party held a fundraiser in Vidor Saturday.
Filing will last a month and end on Monday, December 14 at 6 p.m. Early voting for the primaries will start February 16 and end on February 26.
County offices up for election in 2016 will be for the Precinct 1 and 3 commissioner positions. Precinct 1 Commissioner David Dubose is not seeking re-election. In addition, incumbent tax assessor-collector Lynda Gunstream will not be running again.
Other positions in the county will be for sheriff, currently held by Keith Merritt, plus all four precinct constable offices. The incumbents are Precinct 1, Chris Humble; Precinct 2, David Cagle; Precinct 3, Mark Philpott; and Precinct 4, Weldon Peveto.
The seat for U.S. Representative District 36, held by Brian Babin, and the position of State Representative District 21, with incumbent Dade Phelan, will be on the ballot.
