The Evergreen Cemetery Association dedicated the new office building on Border Street Saturday at 2 p.m. The building is being dedicated in honor of the late Roy Wingate, a lawyer and descendant of a pioneer family. He worked on the cemetery board for a number of years.
The cemetery is the oldest marked one in the city. It was formally established in 1853 when Robert Jackson bought 53 acres, including the area of the cemetery. At one time it was known as Jackson Cemetery. However, people had already been buried on the grounds before that date. Local lore says people were buried there as early as 1840.
Heritage House Museum and the cemetery association are planning a guided tour of the grounds for the spring.
