Early voting for the seven proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution will begin Monday. The election will be November 7.
The voting sites will be the Orange Public Library, 220 North Fifth Street; Bridge City Public Works Department, 220 Nitsche; Mauriceville Volunteer Fire Department, 10691 North Highway 62; and Vidor ISD Administration Building, 120 East Bolivar.
All sites will have the same hours. They will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday October 27, then again 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday October 30 through Friday November 3. Extended hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays October 24 and October 31.
Registered Orange County voters may cast an early ballot at any of the sites. The ballots will be marked ‘for’ or ‘against.’
Proposed amendments must be approved by both houses of the Texas Legislature and then by voters. The amendments on the ballot this year in a capsule are:
* Partially disabled veterans or surviving spouses will get an exemption on market value for property taxes if the homestead is donated by a charitable group.
* Banks and credit unions will be able to have raffles or lotteries as prizes for savings as a way to encourage savings.
* Professional sports teams through team-connected foundations will be able to hold charitable raffles.
* Surviving spouse of first responders killed in the line of duty will be able to get market value exemptions on property taxes.
* Unsalaried gubernatorial appointees whose term has ended but they have not been replaced will serve until the next legislative session has ended.
* State courts must notify the state attorney general of any constitutional challenges to state laws.
* Changes in some restrictions for issuing home equity loans.
