The Orange County Clerk’s Office received new license forms Monday morning for same-sex marriages. It took a day for the word to get out. County Clerk Brandy Robertson said her office issued seven licenses Tuesday for same sex marriages. State law requires a 72-hour waiting period between a wedding ceremony and the issuance of the license. A district judge can waive the wait. That’s what happened Tuesday.
Justice of the Peace Derry Dunn conducted a same-sex wedding Tuesday. He said District Judge Dennis Powell signed a waiver for the couple. They came to Dunn to perform the first same-sex marriage in Orange County. He said the two women have been together for eight years. “They were thrilled to death” to get married, he said.
Dunn has another same sex wedding scheduled for the weekend.
The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling Friday that bans on same-sex marriage are illegal under the U.S. constitution. Dunn said his oath of office requires him to uphold the law and the Supreme Court ruling is the law.
