State District Judge Buddie Hahn on Thursday sentenced a commercial truck driver to 20 years in prison for four counts of manslaughter. Roy Ellis Holcomb Jr. had previously pleaded guilty to the charge after his truck rig caused chain collisions that killed four people on Interstate 10.
The collision happened two years ago Saturday in the westbound lanes near Rose City.
62-year-old Glenda Blackwell of Vidor and her two young great-grandchildren were killed in her Kia SUV. The Texas Department of Public Safety said the SUV became lodged under the Kenworth semitrailer Holcomb was driving.
Luis Alonso Rodrigues Comacho of Mexico was also killed. DPS reported the Kenworth rig drove over the Ford passenger car Comacho was driving, causing the Ford to catch fire.
Holcomb was driving his rig in the center lane westbound on the interstate near the Asher Turnaround. The rig ran into the back of a Volvo semitrailer. The Volvo was knocked into a Dodge pickup. The driver of the pickup was not seriously injured.
Holcomb’s rig then went to the right and drove over Comacho’s Ford. The rig then ran hit Blackwell’s SUV.
The maximum punishment for manslaughter is 20 years in prison.
