Flies and gnats weren’t the only problem for local food businesses. Orange County Health Inspector James Scales recently found a dead bat at one restaurant and a live cat at a seafood eatery.
Only two of 28 food businesses received perfect scores from Scales during the last part of August. He found restaurants and stores with flies, roaches, gnats, a bat and a cat. The lowest score was an 83 for the LCM Mart, 8270 North Highway 87 in Orange.
The inspector also reported finding dead roaches and a dead bat behind the ice machine at Two Amigos on Lutcher Drive in Orange that led to a score of 88. A live cat was found in the back storage area of Crystal Seafood on 16th Street in Orange.
The two perfect scores went to Kidz World Learning Center on Miller Drive in Bridge City and the Bridge City Dairy Queen. Scales made three pre-opening inspections with no scores. One was for the new Little Cypress Junior High cafeteria, another for Dollar Tree in Vidor, and the other for Paul’s Seafood on Lutcher Drive in Orange.
Other scores and demerits are:
Peggy’s on the Bayou, 2682 East Roundbunch Road in Orange: 99. The oven and stove needed to be cleaned. Inspector recommended storage containers and the area under equipment needed to be cleaned more often.
Gator’s Nest, 3145 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 99. Vents above the fryers needed to be cleaned of old grease.
Walmart, 795 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 99. Air vents needed to be cleaned of dust and the inside of the milk cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Tracy Seafood and Wing, 715 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 97. Dates were needed on products. Floors at the walk-in cooler and freezer needed to be cleaned.
Snappy’s Exxpress Mart, 3145 Highway 87 in Bridge City: 97. The walk-in cooler was damaged and needed to be repaired. Light shields were needed. Inspector found damaged ceiling tiles.
Burkhart’s Marina, 1802 Mississippi Street in Orange: 97. Dates were need on products inside coolers and freezers. Inspector reported damaged floors and walls needed to be repaired.
Domino’s Pizza, 2107 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 96. Inspector detected a sour smell in front of restaurant. Storage shelves were rusted in the front cooler. Employee drinks were on the top of a counter without a lid and straw. Floor grout was missing. Baseboard tiles were broken or missing. Floor inside walk-in cooler was not secured to the floor and needed to be repaired.
Wright’s Barbecue Catering, 1096 North Main Street in Vidor: 96. Dates were needed on products. Foods were stored on the floor inside of the walk-in cooler and storage room instead of six inches above floor. Storage shelves and the inside of the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Mutt and Jeff’s, South Main Street in Vidor: 96. White gravy was not at proper temperature, Several gnats were at the three-compartment sink. Light shields were needed above grill area. Bottom of the back door needed to be resealed and the wall near the back door needed to be repaired.
Nolan Food Store, 20390 Interstate 10 West in Vidor: 95. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Dates were needed on sandwiches. Drinks were being stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler.
The Country Store, 6373 FM 1442 in Orangefield: 94. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler instead of six inches off the floor. Back storage area had a missing light shield. Floors behind equipment and coolers needed to be cleaned more often. Back storage area needed to be cleaned. Areas of the ceiling were missing and needed to be repaired. Inspector planned a follow-up inspection.
Vidor Superette, 5645 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice bags of ice being stored. Back storage area had missing floor tiles that needed to be replaced.
Star Stop Exxon Deli, 1415 16th Street in Orange: 93. Slush machine and inside of ice machine needed to be cleaned of mold and slime. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler. Ceiling tiles were missing. A large buildup of ice was coming from a walk-in freezer motor onto the floor and the ice needed to be removed.
Best Price Motel, 2610 Interstate 10 West in Orange: 93. Motel had no sanitizing solution. Foods were stored on the floor inside the dry storage room. Inside of storage cabinets needed to be cleaned. Motel did not have a certified food manager on staff.
Mazzio’s Pizza, 3108 Edgar Brown Drive in Orange: 92. Mold was inside ice machine. Faucet at three-compartment sink had a steady drip and needed to be repaired. Storage shelves, floors, walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floor tiles were broken or missing. Hand-washing station was starting to come off the wall.
Petromart Store, 12099 FM 1442 in Orange: 92. Salads inside the cooler needed to be dated. Broken and unused milk shake machine was at the drink station. Gnats were found at drink station area. Drinks stored on floor of walk-in cooler and sales floor. Light shields were missing. Air vents needed to be repaired of rust. Damaged ceiling tiles were near the drink station and needed to be replaced.
Crystal Seafood, 1609 16th Street in Orange: 91. Live cat was in back storage area. Faucet at three-compartment sink was dripping water at the base and needed to be repaired. Dates were needed on all products. Shrimp were defrosting inside the three-compartment sink. Vent-a-Hood, floors around fryers, door and door handle to the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned of old grease and food. Back storage area needed to be cleaned of trash and rubbish. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
Lone Grocery, 3665 North Main Street in Vidor: 91. Inspector pulled several expired foods and dented cans from shelves. Store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Mice feces were found at drink station area. Drinks stored on floor inside walk-in cooler and storage room. Shelves and county tops at drink station needed to be cleaned and sanitized. Ceiling tiles were damaged throughout the store. Back storage room needed to be cleaned. Unused equipment needed to be discarded.
Two Amigos Mexican Restaurant, 2308 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 88. Cut tomato and all foods in the front cooler were not at proper temperatures. Inspector said front cooler needed to be repaired. Dates were needed on products. Inspector found several dead roaches throughout the restaurant. A dead bat was found behind the ice machine. Employee drinks were not properly stored. Foods were stored on the floor in walk-in cooler. Vent-a-Hood and storage shelves needed to be cleaned of old foods. Floors needed to be cleaned more often. Mold was above the three-compartment sink. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
Moz Grill/Petromart, 12099 FM 1442 in Orange: 88. Faucet at three-compartment sink was patched with duct tape and needed to be replaced. Dates needed on products. Several pieces of equipment were not working and were sitting inside the kitchen. Inspector recommended broken equipment be repaired or replaced. Storage shelves were rusted. Gnats were found. Area around fryers and grills, front food warmers, floors, walls and garbage cans needed to be cleaned of old foods. All air vents needed to be repaired of rust. Store did not have a certified food manager on staff.
Donut Palace, 190 West Freeway in Vidor: 88. Sausage and boudain were not at proper temperatures. Store did not keep a record of times for holding sausage and boudain out of safe temperatures. Dates were needed on products. Cooked bacon was stored on top of egg crates. Ceiling tiles were damaged.
Church’s Chicken, 1322 16th Street in Orange: 85. Air vents were dripping water throughout store. Lots of mice feces were throughout store. Toaster needed to be cleaned of old foods. Air filters not stored properly. Doors to walk-in cooler were damaged and needed to be repaired. Employee drinks did not have lids and straws. Vent-a-Hood and fire system needed to be cleaned of old grease immediately. Floors and walls throughout store needed to be cleaned. Outside wall was damaged and needed to be repaired. Back door needed to be resealed. Broken floor tiles and missing floor grout needed to be fixed. Inspector said score did not reflect the condition.
LCM Mart, 8270 North Highway 87 in Orange: 83. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some back to 2015. Foods were not stored properly inside the walk-in cooler. Raw meat was stored above potato. Ice scoop was on top of box. Faucet at the three-compartment sink was dripping and nozzle needed to be replaced. Reach-in freezer was not closing completely. Several gnats were found. Drinks were stored on floor inside walk-in cooler. Baseboards and the inside of the walk-in cooler needed to be cleaned. Ceiling tiles were damaged throughout the store and needed to be repaired.
