The Orange City Council District 4 race could be a repeat of the close 2013 election that unseated an incumbent. Friday, former councilor Annette Pernell filed for the position now held by Mary McKenna. Three years ago, McKenna beat Pernell by four votes, 148 to 144.
Pernell earlier this month went before the council to ask members to wait before making a decision to buy a bank building on 16th Street to turn into city hall. The council unanimously voted to buy the building and then move from the historic mansion on Green Avenue where city offices have been for more than 70 years.
McKenna and Pernell live in restored houses in the Old Orange Historic District. They are running for the Single-member District 4 seat. The district includes most of the historic district plus some other neighborhoods. Only people who live in District 4 may vote for the seat.
Incumbent Councilor Wayne Guidry also filed to run on Friday. Guidry was elected last year to the one year left on an unexpired term for Single Member District 2. The district includes mostly the Little Cypress area. Residents only vote for the position.
Incumbent Bill Mello filed earlier this week for another three-year term in the At-Large Place 5 position. Every eligible voter in the city may vote for at-large seats.
Filing for the May 7 election ends Friday, February 19.
