It took over five months of negotiations to reach a collective bargaining agreement between the Sheriff’s Office Employees Association and Orange County, but the two parties reached a tentative agreement September 16. The union representatives met with County Judge Brint Carlton and Commissioner Jody Crump on Saturday afternoon to agree on a two-year extension to the deputies’ contract.
Judge Carlton provided some of the details of the extension. The contract will give the deputies disaster pay the same as all other county employees. Holiday and overtime pay calculations will be based on a mutual agreement the two parties reached earlier in the negotiations.
The contract extension means the deputies will start receiving certificate pay again. The agreement provides for certificate pay at 150 percent of its normal rate. “That’ll makeup even more then since it stopped back in June,” Carlton stated.
The judge explained that the collective bargaining agreement is tentative until the contract is approved by a vote of the Commissioners Court and a vote of the entire Sheriff’s Office Employees Association. It is expected both will be done this week.
