County EDC
A week after voting to cut funding to the Orange County Economic Development Corporation (EDC), County Judge Brint Carlton declared it is not dead. At Commissioners Court Monday Judge Carlton said the county is looking into alternative ways to bring economic development to the county. Carlton stated the county is working to come up with an alternative which includes still using the EDC perhaps in a restructured format since it is funded through the end of the fiscal year until October 1. Some options Judge Carlton mentioned were either getting a new executive director, looking at a third party consultant, or hiring someone internal for the county. Carlton surmised that the Commissioners Court would like to see the EDC stay together in a restructured format, and he added that the county is actively doing that and has already started those discussions.
County to join Hospital study August 3, 2015
Orange County will join with other entities in a comprehensive study to attract a new hospital to the county. Dr. Shawn Oubre, City Manager for the City of Orange, spoke to the Commissioners Court Monday asking them to join in funding the study. The Court approved spending $14,280 to fund the study by New Light Healthcare out of Austin. County Judge Brint Carlton said the study will be just one of several options the county is pursuing. Judge Carlton advised that the county is working on trying to get a Veterans Administration inpatient hospital in Orange, attempting to get an indigent health care facility in the county, as well as the study for recruiting a new hospital for Orange County. Dr. Oubre indicated several cities in the county including Orange as well as the Stark Foundation and the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce have agreed to support the study.
