A man learned the hard way not to leave keys in a car. As he stood nearby, someone took the car and then wrecked it.
Orange police were called about 10:30 Tuesday morning to Blue Bird park off Simmons Drive. The owner of a Ford Focus station wagon told an officer that he parked the car and walked out to look at the water in the bayou. He turned back and saw a man get into his car and start it.
The car backed out and the thief held up the car owner’s cell phone as he drove away. The owner started running after the car.
The crook didn’t get far. Police said the car hit a pontoon in front of Blue Bird and then hit landscape timbers. The crash blew out a front tire and damaged the front of the car. The thief got out and ran away toward the west.
