No action was taken Tuesday by the City Council on a request by a resident in Bridge City to have his property de-annexed from the city. Donny Huebner lives in the one hundred block of Texas Avenue and has a travel trailer that is in violation of Bridge City ordinances.
Apparently Huebner’s wife lives in the travel trailer which is hooked into utilities on his property. She is physically unable to get into the more elevated home nearby and thus the need for the trailer.
City Manager Jerry Jones recommended that it would not be advisable for the City Council to grant the de-annexation request. Jones added that granting a variance which Bridge City has done in similar circumstances would be a better alternative. Jones suggested, “That he (Huebner) come in to apply for a variance and we’ll send it to the board and see what we can do.” Jones promised he would make sure Huebner is aware of all his other options including receiving a variance for the trailer.
The City Council approved continuing the Bridge City curfew ordinance for minors. No comments were received during a public hearing on the ordinance, but Police Chief Paul Davis later reported that holidays and school breaks are when the ordinance has the most violations by minors. Chief Davis encouraged the continuation of the ordinance and the council complied.
Weisinger Incorporated was awarded the contract to repair the Romero Well in the Bridge City water system. The lining on the inside of the well needs replacing. The cost of repairs will be over $121,000 which Jones said will be much cheaper than constructing a whole new well.
The City Council received the city’s audit from last fiscal year by Keri Michutka and the Racial Profiling Report for last year from Chief Davis during the meeting. A waiver was granted the Orange County Mosquito Control District to fly at low altitudes over Bridge City to spray for mosquitoes.
The final business done Tuesday night was cancelling the March 7 meeting of the City Council to allow the mayor and alderpersons to attend Golden Triangle Days on March 6-7 in Austin. The next scheduled meeting of the City Council in Bridge City is March 21, but City Manager Jones said a special meeting could be called in the interim if necessary to take care of any important municipal business that arises.
