The Orange Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to bring jet ski racing to the Boat Ramp. On Tuesday, the city council will vote to spend $15,000 to bring the TxH20 ski event here on July 14 and 15.
City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan in a memo said the event is expected to attract up to 50 competing racers who will be staying in local hotels.
The convention and visitors bureau uses hotel occupancy taxes to promote tourism. The $15,000 will come from that fund. The tax income under state law has restricted uses. Trahan said the jet ski races fit into the category.
The agenda also includes a public hearing and a first reading vote on two zone changes.
One request is from Woody Dorman III to re-zone 1.4 acres between Old Timers Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive from high density residential to commercial. People who live on Old Timers Road protested the change at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting earlier in the month.
Also, Lisa and Demetrius Hunter are looking to change three lots in the 1400 block of Tenth Street from medium density residential to light commercial.
The council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council auditorium next to the Orange Public Library.
