Concerns of the need for a county animal shelter have been raised again. Precinct One County Commissioner David Dubose said some of his constituents asked him for an agenda item to be considered by the Commissioners Court. Later they asked Dubose to remove the item since they were not ready to discuss the animal shelter presently, but may request the discussion with the Commissioners at another date.
Dubose indicated it was about seven years ago that the Court did consider funding a countywide animal shelter, but found it was not feasible. Dubose explained that the county needed all the cities to agree to support a county shelter. Only the City of Orange showed support for the shelter and the county could not afford funding it without the backing from the cities of Vidor and Bridge City.
Membership on the Commissioners Court has changed as has many of the members on various city councils in the last seven years. Dubose believes support for the animal shelter may change this time in favor of it. Commissioner Dubose is in favor of such a shelter, but realizes it will have its opponents in the county just like the last time. Dubose stated that all of his animals were adopted from shelters, but anticipates “opposition like you wouldn’t believe” when discussions arise on raising taxes to fund an animal shelter.
