Most of the friendly human faces seen at Shangri La Gardens are volunteers. Thursday afternoon the Stark Foundation honored them with the unveiling of a special wall sign paying tribute to those who serve.
Katie Krantz, volunteer coordinator, said more than 128,000 hours have been provided by volunteers. “One of the main compliments we get (from visitors) is it feels like family,” she said. The volunteers give that friendly atmosphere.
Walter Riedel, president and CEO of the Stark Foundation, which owns and operates Shangri La, told the group “Volunteering is the heart of our success.”
The wall sign lists the names of volunteers as they reach milestones of serving. Carolyn Seibert, Phyllis Ryan and Marilyn Powell each have surpassed 3,000 hours. Also, the wall has a section to hold a photograph for the Volunteer of the Month.
Anyone interested in volunteering at Shangri La should contact Krantz at 409-670-9341.
