Friday was the annual Orange Means Safety Day at the Texas Travel Information Center on Interstate 10. Glenn Weathington with the Travel Information Center said the purpose of the safety day celebration sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is to promote safety for everyone this summer and the program is all about safety in Texas. The emphasis was safety, but there were fun activities for all ages. The Big Thicket Outlaws staged western gun fights to help promote gun safety. Shangri La had several live animal exhibits while Texas Parks and Wildlife had a baby alligator that children could touch, both to help promote safety in the outdoors. The TxDOT crash dummies, the Port Arthur alligator, and Sparky the fire dog were all on hand to emphasize Orange Means Safety at the information center. Local partners joining TxDOT in the safety day included Sabine Federal Credit, Liz Hogan Allstate Insurance, Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, the Orange Fire Department, the Bridge City Police Department, the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Texas Parks & Wildlife, the Port Arthur Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Ben J. Rogers Visitors Center.
