Maxine the Barred Owl at Shangri La has died. She had been rescued at a young age after being entangled in a barbed wire fence, an accident that caused her to lose a wing. After being healed, she was adopted and became a popular attraction for thousands of school children for more than a decade through Shangri La. She made appearances at schools and Shangri La. During the Fall Festival and Eco-Fest she was a popular attraction on her perch.
Volunteers at the botanical gardens and nature center fed her a diet of dead quail chicks and mice. Maxine lived longer than the 10-year average lifespan of a barred owl in the wild.
