David C. Claybar had help from his 5-year-old son, Keller, Wednesday afternoon during the unveiling of a state historical marker at the Old Orange Cafe. The marker honors the local dairy industry. Claybar’s cafe is now in what was the county’s only pasteurizing dairy. It was built about 1941.
Judge Jerry Pennington, chair of the Orange County Historical Commission, joked that Claybar didn’t make a cafe and put tiles on the walls and floors to echo customers’conversations. The tiles were part of the dairy so it could be washed down and sanitized.
A crowd of about 50, including officials from the city of Orange and the Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce, attended the ceremony. Also attending were Susan and Terry Childers, who started Old Orange Cafe in 1990. Claybar later purchased the business.
The next historical marker dedication will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the home of Judge Pennington and his wife, Susan. The house at 612 W. Orange Avenue was built in 1909. KOGT.com will have a history story on the house before the dedication.
