Stark Museum of Art Offers Thematic Programming with New Exhibition
Branding the American West: Paintings and Films, 1900-1950
(ORANGE, TX) The Stark Museum of Art is preparing for one of the most significant exhibitions in its history, Branding the American West: Paintings and Films, 1900-1950, opening March 11, 2017 and on view through September 9, 2017. The exhibition will include more than 80 works of art and related film content highlighting the changing brands, or imagery of violence, beauty and celebration of the American West.
Specifically, the exhibition is the first to examine collectively the imaging of the American West by members of the Taos Society of Artists and the California-based artist, Maynard Dixon. Itshowcases works from the first half of the twentieth century portraying images of the landscape, people, and environment of a West immersed in change.
Stark Museum of Art Curator of Education, Jennifer Restauri and her team of educators are preparing a host of programs the correlate with the exhibition; each designed to enrich the experiences of all who participate.
Exhibition Programs include:
* March 9 – Members’ Only Exhibition Preview (RSVP)
* March 11 – Branding the American West Exhibition opens
Drawn West Juried Student Art Exhibition opens
Artwork will depict imagery of the American West to coordinate with Branding
the American West. The exhibition of student artwork is juried by Staff at the
Stark Museum of Art and will include works of art created by K-12 artists in
Region 5, TX and Calcasieu Parish, LA.

The exhibition opening was prefaced by the publication of an award-winning
Catalog with essays, Branding the American West: Paintings and Films, 1900-
1950, edited by Marian Wardle and Stark Museum of Art Curator, Sarah E.
Boehme.
* March 31 – A New Frontier: Digital Media Teacher Workshop*
Hands-on Teacher Workshop to discover new art-making techniques with
digital drawing, ceramics, glass, and stop motion apps.
* April 5 – Drawn West Juried Student Art Exhibition Reception
Meet the students who created the works of art on display, enjoy light refreshments and live music. Awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m.
* April 8 – Western Family Day
Free for all ages, guests are invited to come in their favorite western wear and
enjoy art-making, face painting, family games and fun music. Visit the special
exhibition, go on a scavenger hunt and win a prize. See the 78 ft. mural painted
by Orange County students. Delight in lemonade, cookies and a special
performance by LCM 5th Grade Choir.
* May 20 – CREATE! Workshop: Photo Fun*
Make you own original piece of art using an acrylic photo transfer technique.
All materials are included with $5 materials fee. Admission to the Museum is
free.
* June 13, 20, 27 – Adult Studio Art Workshops: Oil Painting*
Discover oil painting during this three part adult studio art workshop. This workshop
will be a great introduction or refresher course for adult artists. Special guest teaching
artist to be announced.
* July 21 – Summer Night at the Museum
Art after dark is back! Load up the family and celebrate the opening of the new Walter G. Riedel III Education Center. This after-hours event will include art-making, music,
special eats, and much more family fun!
* August 11 – SMA Playdate: Way Out West*
Children 5 and under and their grown-ups will “head west” to meet some of the
cowboys and cowgirls in the Museum, enjoy together the book: Cowgirl Rosie
& Her Five Baby Bison by Stephen Gulbis and create their own wearable art in
the art studio. Children are encouraged to wear their favorite western wear!
* August 17 – Book discussion with Exhibition Companion Catalog co-editor,
Sarah E. Boheme
Join Sarah E. Boehme, Curator and Exhibition Companion Catalog co-editor, for a Brown Bag Lunch Discussion about the special exhibition and catalog Branding the American West: Paintings and Films, 1900-1950.
* August 19 – Art Quest Summer Camp Reception
Meet student artists from this year’s Summer Art Quest Camps and Teen Workshops and view a special exhibition of their artwork in the new Walter G. Riedel III Education Center.
* September 12 – Momix Opus Cactus at Lutcher Theater
Choreographer,Moses Pendleton brings the landscape of the American
Southwest to life with his signature illusionistic style creating dynamic images
of cactuses, slithering lizards and fire dancers.
