Bridge City could be getting a farmers’ market starting in the next few weeks. Marian Pepper spoke to the City Council on Tuesday about her desire to start a market for fresh produce in the city.
Pepper stated she raises chicken, has eggs, a garden, and makes jellies. She has mentioned the idea to some people and was informed previous such markets were started, but fell apart.
The response this time has been overwhelming Pepper said from other people that produce items that could be sold at the market. She has also been told by a lot of the citizens in Bridge City that they want to see a farmers’ market in town and would support it. “I’m asking if there is a place for us to have a farmers’ market here in Bridge City,” Pepper inquired.
Mayor David Rutledge was very interested in the idea having organized such a market himself several years ago. City Manager Jones indicated the walking track near the Seniors’ Center at the City Park on Parkside off of West Roundbunch Road could be mowed and prepared as a site for the farmers’ market. Pepper felt that location would work for her.
The plan according to Pepper would be a weekly market held on Saturday mornings. She is very optimistic that the market could be a reality shortly.
