Several restaurants and businesses had perfect scores during January inspections from the Orange County Health Inspector James Scales. 

The perfect scores were for Lucy’s Cafe and Bakery, 2488 MLK Drive, Orange; Shipley's Donuts, 2913 MacArthur Drive; Dollar General, 1752 Highway 12, Vidor; Dairy Queen, 1780 Texas Ave., Bridge City;  Elements Cafe and Bakery, 1055 Texas Ave., Bridge City; Sonic, 11786 Highway 62 North, Mauriceville; Diamond Shamrock, 3900 N. 16th St., Orange; Walgreen's, 1305 N. Main St., Vidor; Neches Grocery, 3035 FM 1131, Vidor; Wal-Mart Deli, 3115 Edgar Brown Drive, West Orange; North Star Children's Center, 5830 N. Main St., Vidor, and Apple Tree School, 9983 FM 105, Orangefield.

The lowest score went to IB Cheapers, 11365 Highway 12, in Mauriceville. The store had a 74 out of 100 points. Scales' report cited that mice feces were found in the storage area, fried chicken and burrito were out of temperature, names and address are needed on all bags of ice, bait shrimp stored next to bags of ice and dishes were inside the hand washing sink. In addition, he found mold on drink dispensers and the cappuccino machine needed cleaning. He pulled approximately 196 expired foods from shelves. Scales said a follow-up inspection is needed.

Several stores were found not to have the required 2013 food service permits and were given time to get them.

Jack in the Box, 1315 N. Main St., Vidor, 93. Inspected after a complaint about the freezer not working and food still being served called in. Found an employee with improper jewelry, outside of storage equipment and shelves need to be cleaned of old foods. No problems found with the freezer.

McDonald's, 7311 Highway 62 in McLewis, 89. Found several expired foods and pulled from the cooler. Hamburger patties were stored directly on a cardboard box, mold found inside ice machine and drink dispensers, cleaned dishes found with food stuck on them.

Kotoyama, 2226 MacArthur Drive, Pinehurst, 83. Corrections needed included a need to label and date foods in the cooler, bottled drinks were submerged inside the ice machine, food was stored on the floor of the cooler and no soap or towels were at the hand washing sink. The inspector also found lots of dead roaches throughout the kitchen and pipes leaking at the compartment sinks.

Taco Bell, 2929 16th St., Orange, 97. Walk-in freezer door not closing completely.

Big M’s Exxon Station, 1918 A Strickland Drive, Pinehurst, 93. Pulled 39 expired foods from shelves. Found ice scoop on top of a box.

Valero Corner Store, 7523 Interstate 10 East, Orange, 96. Pulled several expired foods from shelves.

Bridge City Food Mart, 1000 West Roundbunch Road, Bridge City, 96. Pulled several expired food items from shelves.

Zapco Food Mart, 18548 Highway 62 South, Orange, 89. Name and address needed on bagged ice, foods in coolers need to be dated and labeled, 18 expired food items pulled from shelves, mold found in Slushy machine.

Texas Food Store, 305 Burton Ave., Orange, 89. Name and address needed on bags of ice, pulled 81 expired foods from shelves, mound found inside Slushy machine.

LCM Mart, 8270 N. Highway 87, Orange, 93. Pulled 59 expired foods from shelves and mold was found on drink dispensers.

Sonic, 3103 N. 16th St., Orange, 94. Walk-in cooler not keeping correct temperature, mold found on drink dispensers (cleaned during inspection), need to clean outside of all equipment in kitchen and food prep areas.

Popeye’s Chicken, 952 N. Main St., Vidor, 94. Pipes at compartment sink dripping water, found several cleaned dishes with food stuck on them.

Pop’s Place (The Pit Stop), 4795 N. Main St., Vidor, 96. Fish need to be defrosted with running water.

Family Dollar, 1540 Strickland Drive, Pinehurst, 96. Pulled 104 expired foods from shelves. Noted to clean spider webs from walls and ceilings above food.

Kam Wah Buffet, 150 Strickland Drive, Pinehurst, 82. Field inspection after a complaint was filed about a roach being found in food. Advised restaurant to contact pest management. Also cited need to date and label foods in cooler, need to cover foods in cooler, foods stored on floor of walk-in cooler, dead roaches found in kitchen, inside of coolers need to be cleaned.

Found ham, eggs and ranch dressing off temperature; employee had artificial nails and improper jewelry; need to date foods in coolers; salad bar cooler not keeping all foods at proper temperature; cleaned dishes found with old food stuck. Also suggested cleaning vents of dust and cleaning area under sink of mold and old foods, vents need to be cleaned and painted and storage racks in the cooler beginning to rust.
